About the Program
It’s Time to Lead
The vulnerable children we serve through our scholarship programs are hit
first and hardest in an economic crisis. As the needs of our community grow,
we must meet the challenge head-on. As other organizations shrink their programming
to meet the bottom line, The
Theatre Lab is there to fill the gap — increasing, rather than cutting back,
its educational programs, scholarships and outreach initiatives. Affordability,
accessibility and outreach are at the core of our mission, and we are committed
to awarding a record-breaking $53,000 in 2009 to ensure that severely disadvantaged
children can continue to reap the artistic and real-life benefits of exceptional
dramatic arts education.
Your Contribution Goes Straight to a Child
Just $625 provides a full camp scholarship to a needy child. Nearly 40% of
the more than 300 kids attending camp this summer will be scholarship students
from Washington’s most distressed communities. Every ticket purchased
— and each contribution made in lieu of attending our benefit —
will make a dramatic difference in the life of a child.
Won’t You Help?
About The Theatre Lab’s Youth Programs
Our nationally recognized, award-winning Summer
Acting Camps for Kids, serving children ages 5-13, are taught by Washington’s
best professional theatre artists and educators. Camp activities are designed
to ignite the imagination and promote self-confidence while introducing children
to the joys of artistic expression. From exploring improvisation to diving into
Shakespeare and putting it all together in a public performance, it's an experience
that will linger in the mind of a child long after the summer is over. This
summer’s programs also include teen training institutes that will culminate
in public performances of The Laramie Project, The Secret Garden and Side Show.
To identify scholarship students, we work with respected grassroots organizations
including CentroNia, House of Ruth, Martha’s Table, and Sasha Bruce YouthWorks.
- The Theatre Lab’s nationally recognized youth program has been designated
one of the 50 “top arts and humanities based programs in the country
serving youth outside of school hours” by the President’s Committee
on the Arts and Humanities.
- The Catalogue for Philanthropy has recognized The Theatre Lab as one of
the best small charities "selected for excellence, innovation, and cost-effectiveness"
in its service to the DC community.
- The Theatre Lab is a finalist for the 2009 Mayor’s Arts Award for
Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education
- The Theatre Lab and its Directors are recipients of the prestigious Linowes
Leadership Award, recognizing their innovative work with under-served communities,
including incarcerated and at-risk youth, seniors, and people living with
HIV/AIDS.
Thanks For Making Our Award-Winning Work Possible
Meeting our 2009 scholarship goal of $53,000 will allow us to provide scholarships
for DC metro youth who, without your generosity, would not be attending any
camp at all this summer. The opportunity to attend The Theatre Lab's nationally
recognized award-winning acting camps for kids is one that can truly make a
dramatic difference in the life of a child, and one that can result in a positive
and lasting community connection that will nurture and support the academic,
social and artistic development of that child throughout youth and adolescence,
and even into adult life. We couldn't do it without you!
